| While Heaven Wept is a doom-metal band from the US, that has been active for over 10 years already. All material that has been recorded and released over the first 10 years of their existence has been released on a Double LP by Germany`s Metal Supremacy. These two vinyl discs, contain some rare material that has been out of print for ages, so if you`re still looking for certain WHW items, this would be the time to strike. I have to tell you to be quick because only 500 copies are available. The music WHW has created over the years can be considered as the most epic doom ever. You can detect a certain influence of bands like Candlemass or Solitude Aeturnus, but WHW gave it their own twist, coming up with some tracks that, in my opinion, can be classified as truely magnificent. Just listen to songs like "Thus with a kiss I die" or "Into the wells of sorrow". Pure masterpieces of doommetal art. The packaging of this DLP is great as well. The gatefold cover contains liner notes from Tom Philips, the main man behind WHW, and lyrics to all songs. Excellent stuff. - Pim, Quintessence Zine, Netherlands, (2002) | ||
Being a fan of underground music, you're sometimes
faced with an excruciating inaccessibility to the output you crave. Case in
point: While Heaven Wept. Over the course of a decade, this band has put out
two CDs and two 7"ers (one a split with Cold Mourning). Unfortunately,
each of these releases have come in editions of 1000 copies or less, making
them rather difficult to come by. Thanks to Germany's Metal Supremacy label,
now all the recordings of While Heaven Wept's first ten years have been packaged
together in this amazing double LP, Chapter One: 1989-1999. This collection
is ultimately a monument to the brilliance of this band and the songwriting
skills of leader Tom Phillips. It all confirms that While Heaven Wept is not
only the best epic doom band in the world but one of the best bands, period. |

| Any faithful Doom-monger must've come across the name WHILE HEAVEN WEPT in one way or another, be it their diverse cherished underground releases, or their many contributions to compilations, e.g. on the now infamous "At The Mountains Of Madness" album. In case you were eagerly on the hunt for all their, mostly out-of-print-releases, your quest has come to an end as this double-LP, released via Germany's Metal Supremacy, captures everything this awesome outfit put out and more. Packaged in a very noble gatefold sleeve, containing extensive liner notes by the main-man Tom Phillips himself, accompanied by a very tasteful layout, this is definitely the ultimate WHILE HEAVEN WEPT release so far! Spanning their whole career from the very beginning, when they still had Death Metal vocals incorporated until their latest offerings with the most bittersweet approach imaginable, this album includes their "Into The Wells Of Sorrow" 7", their "Lovesongs Of The Forsaken" MCD, the split-7" with Cold Mourning, as well as their ultimate masterpiece, namely the "Sorrow Of The Angels" album. As an added bonus, you get a so-called work-in-progress song called "Unplenitude", that remained completely unreleased. To explain to an outsider the immense emotional depth of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT is quite a useless attempt. Imagine your most desolate melancholic state of mind put to music. Outstanding musicianship crowned by the painfully staking voice of Tom Phillips, who constantly seems to be on the verge of crying his heart out. Lyrically they deal with "positive" themes, such as forsaken love, mourning, sorrow and all kinds of other "uplifting" things, yet there is the point, where WHILE HEAVEN WEPT are different to many other bands, singing about those subjects. I think those topics have been overdone by now for good, and it's not really easy to cover such emotions without sounding too trite or cheesy, but listening to these heartfelt songs, it all just feels so sincere and deep you can't possibly remain untouched. All in all, this is for sure a must-have release for anyone out there, whose heart is pounding for emotional music, that doesn't sound "gay" or wanna-be gothic at all, as this is a shining star among most of today's musical ashes. Eventually there's only one thing to criticize about this double-LP, which is limited to 500 copies only. It's definitely a shame, that the songs on side 2 and 3 have those interruptions in between, as it takes away something from the prevalent atmosphere, and -of course- wasn't like that on the original releases. - Opolus, CosmicLava.de, Germany (2003) | ||
| This is really a cool idea! Probably the saddest Doom-band on earth (who are CANDLEMASS? ;) ) releases ALL their songs, which were written (Nomen est Omen) between 1989 and 1999. The whole discography of the band has been included on this release! Of course this release has to come in an adequate way to the market. To the facts: limited on 500 copies, noble paperback, liner notes, all lyrics, insert and LP 1 in clear Vinyl. If that is nothing, I don't know! A very collectable release. LP 1 opens with the overlong (over one-quarter of an hour!) "Thus with a kiss I die", that really touches me in the shallows of my soul. Sad and mournful Doom Metal, very good produced and presented with such intensity everything around you becomes blurred, you are swimming through an ocean of tears. An epic masterpiece! The LP is further screened with the most well known song of the band, "Into the wells of sorrow", on Side B. To write something about this hot-as-hell lump of lava is senseless, but I'll do it nevertheless. Epic and mournful this song winds with dark-beautiful sounds toward my ears, supported by discreet keyboards. Even sadder is "The Death of Love" (what a to-the-pint title!). if somebody thinks about suicide, he shouldn´t listen to this song! "September" is a small, but fine, instrumental, which ends for the time being with the depressive reign, because you have to change the LP. LP 1 was originally released as "Sorrow of the Angels" in 1998. On Side 1 of LP 2 sound three pieces of art (I don´t want to call them songs!), which fascinate me for new, every time I listen to them. They were released as "Lovesongs of the Forsaken" in 1995 and it was the very first release of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT (if we don't count the 7" from 1994). This triumvirate is a homogenate unit, which (both musically and lyrically) tells the true story of sadness and lost love! The very catchy "In Aeturnum" inaugurates this LP. The song is really fast (for a doom-song) and the acoustic and atmospheric middle-part reminds me a lot on English doomsters SOLSTICE. The sound of falling rain is the bridge between the songs of this Side and that was a very good choice, because that makes it even more mournful, than it is naturally. "La mort d´amour" is the more intensive and balladesque version of "The Death of Love". What shall I say; this track is the most depressive and mournful song I've ever heard in my whole life! After listening to this work of art, you only have two choices: melting in self-pity or killing yourself! In the end, the band takes the rest of the essence of your human being and awakes it, which will surely be nearly dead of depression. But as the mournful synthie-guitar-solo sounds, your soul will be taken on a short travel to the darkest places of earth and back and finally be spit out. Great masterpieces of Epic Doom Metal! Side 2 of LP 2 than offers some rare and unknown tracks from the very beginning of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT. "The Mourning" was the very first song of the band back from 1989. The song isn't really epic and sad, but the riffing is very Thrash-like and it has some BLACK SABBATH-vibes. Tom Philips shows the listeners in this song, that he can convince even in the deeper grounds of his voice. "Unplenitude" is a very short and even a little bit pop-like track, that is very untypical for WHILE HEAVEN WEPT, but I like it. The two last songs of this LP are a Doom-Death-version of "Into the Wells of Sorrow" (from the 7" from 1994) and the very old track "Shores of Desolation", which is also more Death Doom Metal than Epic Doom Metal. Not really my cup of tea, but it's interesting to hear, how the band sounded in the beginning (on this two songs, the very first singer of WHW, not Tom Philips, is singing). And I think, that the voice was a little bit manipulated in studio, but who knows? This DLP is a must-have for fans of Epic Doom Metal, if they don't have "Sorrow of the Angels" and "Lovesongs of the Forsaken" and a record player. Doom Metal has never been player more mournful and depressive! Rating: 5/5 - Steffen Bauer, Blooddawn.de, Germany (2003) | ||
While Heaven Wept is the best doom band in the world, and
this is a double LP compilation (thanks to German label Metal Supremacy, of
all places) of the singles and splits from the 10 years that WHW languished
through all the troubled times of obscurity and lineup changes. If you can find
it for sale (only 500 pressings were reportedly made, which I do not understand
at all, because while WHW is not that popular, a double album of their entire
catalogue of impossible to find material for the last 10 years is far more than
'500 copies' popular) then you will want to take care of it, because WHW may
be gone soon, leaving behind an underground legacy few will be able to match.
Why is While Heaven Wept so damned impressive? Simple. They play epic, sorrowful
doom better than anyone else in history. Every song on this EP cries out agony
and pain from every riff, chorus, and vocal section. The effect, while not as
powerful as on Of Empires Forlorn, (their only true, and probably only album
period) it is very strong indeed. Plus, there are classic songs on here that
you can't find anywhere else, such as the staggering "Thus With a Kiss I Die",
which clocks in at a hefty 16:38 in length. (I did say this was epic doom, didn't
I?) |

| WHILE HEAVEN WEPT is one of the best and more unique doom metal acts. This double-LP includes all four releases of the band. The first record is "Sorrow Of The Angels" the band's debut CD. It is one of the most sentimental albums I've ever heard. Very slow tempos, but wonderful expression! The second record includes my band's favorite release "Lovesongs Of The Forsaken", the first 7' inch "Into the wells of sorrow" (with death vocals, still two magnificent doom songs), "Unplenitude" (an anthem that remained out of "Sorrow..." CD) and "The Mourning" a crushing track from the split 7'' of the band with COLD MOURNING. This gatefold vinyl includes lyrics and a bio and comments of the band with a fantastic layout. Hurry up, because this is also a limited edition of 500 copies. Greg Varsamis, Singing Swords issue 4, Greece (7/2003) | ||
| Despite that this one has been available for about a year now, I just couldn't resist doing a review on it anyway. Anyone into doom metal (be it epic, old school, sludge, stoner, funeral...) should have this one in his or her collection. Even if you already own all of the band's back catalogue (which is presented hear nearly- entirely), you should still buy it simply for having the "Sorrow Of The Angels" and "Lovesongs Of The Forsaken" recordings on good old vinyl. As I'm sure most of you are aware by now that a few problems occurred at the pressing plant which caused some copies to come out in a golden (-ish) sleeve instead of the intended black one, but this way you get to buy this masterpiece of epic majestic doom twice...once again, should be available from all the usual sources...don't forget only 500 copies were pressed and they won't be available forever!!! - Jean Mathues, Reflections Of Doom issue 13, Belgium (2003) | ||
